There are many types of dental emergencies. There are some that are very severe and could result in you being hospitalized. That is why it is very important to keep your teeth clean and and attend the dentist for regular cleanings.
The most severe type of dental emergency is a facial or dental trauma leading to airway obstruction or uncontrolled bleeding. Some examples include:
- Severe Facial Trauma – Fractured jaw or skull affecting breathing or causing massive bleeding.
- Ludwig’s Angina – A life-threatening infection that spreads rapidly under the tongue and can block the airway.
- Dental Abscess with Systemic Infection – An untreated abscess that spreads to the bloodstream, leading to sepsis, a potentially fatal condition.
- Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Tooth in a Child or Permanent Tooth – A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate reimplantation to save it.
- Uncontrolled Bleeding – After dental surgery or trauma, persistent bleeding can indicate a serious problem, such as a clotting disorder or arterial injury.
Any of these conditions require immediate emergency medical attention. If breathing is compromised, call 911 or go to the ER immediately.
